and for comfort for his family. Stephen is the son of Ed and Dede and brother to Sarah. Yesterday, at the age of 22, he had a seizure while asleep at Mount Angel Benedictine monastery, and died.
We have known the family for many years now. Ed and Dede are good friends of our family, and Stephen was a friend of Andrew and Teresa. For the last few years, he had been looking for a monastery to join, but, in addition to the usual discernment challenges, he also had to find one which would be willing to take him with his history of epilepsy. At Mt. Angel, he found a home and was happy.
Next week, he was to move from his postulancy to become a novice. He is reported to have quipped: once we’re novices, they have to bury us in the abbey cemetery. The abbey is granting this request, and treating him as a brother even though he never officially became a novice. It’s clearly what he wanted.
Eternal rest grant to Stephen, O Lord
And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, and souls of all the faithful departed
Through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
His mom and dad and sister are good people. Please pray that they be comforted. They can take comfort in that, given Stephen’s manifest holiness and devotion to the sacraments, they have few worries over the ultimate disposition of his soul.
With Andrew, Stephen’s death is the second from a small group of remarkable and holy young men here.
