This kerfuffle (H/T: Mark Shea) has occasioned renewal of the charming call that public education not be ‘political’. Just roll this sentence around in your mouth, and see if it doesn’t taste a little funny: Compulsory, centralized, state-controlled education should be politically neutral.
I’m thinking that reaction is a little unclear on the concept. Would you expect a Catholic school to be neutral on the topic of religion? (that many are these days is beside the point.)
Send you kid to a state-controlled school, get state-approved ‘education’. You’d expect something else?
